“Baralacha La” is a high mountain pass in Zanskar region of Jammu and Kashmir, connecting Lahaul district in Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh in Jammu and Kashmir. It is situated at an altitude of 4833 mt above sea level . This mountain pass, one of the highest passes in Ladakh is around 73 kilometers away from Keylong on Manali – Leh road.
It is a high plateau where three different mountain ranges – Pir Panjal, Zanskar and the Great Himalayas. Baralacha pass is open from June to November and for the rest of the year it is under heavy snow. The snowfall in the regions around Baralacha la is said to be round about 12-14m.
The pass serves as a natural divide between the Bhaga and Yunam rivers and is near the origination points of the Bhaga River and the Chandra River. The Bhaga River is a tributary of Chenab River which is also known as the Chandrabhaga River. The tributary originates from the Suraj Tal, a few kilometers from Baralacha Pass.
