Bhimtal is a small town located in in the Nainital district of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 1371 metres above the sea level. This is one of the most popular destinations of the state that attracts a large number of travelers every year.
The main tourist attraction of this Bhimtal is its lake. It is one of the largest lakes in the district of Nainital, It is even larger than the Naini Lake. There is an island at the centre of Bhimtal Lake which can be reached by a boat. The island provides a panoramic view of the lake as well as its luxuriant surroundings. This island has an aquarium with different species of fish from China, South Africa and Mexico. Fishing is prohibited here.
The Bhimtal lake is named after the legendary ‘Bhim’ one of the five Pandavas of Mahabharata. The beautiful lake is surrounded by lush green mountains that give tourists a rare chance to witness the rich beauty of the place. Bhimeshwar Temple situated on the bank of Bhimtal Lake and devoted to Lord Shiva. This temple is constructed by Bhim during the ancient time. The present temple was renovated by Baz Bahadur of Chand Dynasty in the 17th century.
Other attraction are ‘Nal Damayanti Lake‘, two kilometres from Bhimtal, where King Nala is said to have drowned. Sattal, a collection of lakes located 5 km from Bhimtal, Karkotaka, known for its ‘Nag Temple’, visited by devotees on the auspicious day of Rishi Panchami, Folk Culture Museum, known for rock arts, folk paintings, archaeological items, and ancient manuscripts Godhakhal Temple, Hidimba Parvat, named after one of the demons from Mahabharata Hidimba, etc. In the Hidimba Parvat there is an animal sanctuary Vankhandi Ashram created by Vankhandi Maharaj.
Various species of mammals and butterflies, birds like kingfishers, brown-headed barbets, blue whistling-thrush, Indian tree pies, and red-billed blue magpies are commonly seen here.
