Kangra is a beautiful district of the Himalayan state of the Himachal Pradesh of India. It is located at the confluence of the Manjhi and Bener river in Himachal Pradesh. In the ancient times Kangra was called as Nagrkot. In the great Indian epic Mahabharata, Kangra is referred to as the Trigarta Kingdom.
Kangra town is located in the beautiful Kangra valley, amids of the mountain ranges of the Shivaliks and the Dhauladhar. The Kangra valley is full of greenery and provides a tremendous contrast in nature of places to be visited.
Kangra is famous for its Vajreshwari Devi (Kangra Devi) temple. Though the original temple was destroyed in a devastating earthquake in 1905, the present one is rebuilt on the same site in 1920. Thousand of devotees comes across the country every year.
The famous Kangra fort is located on the bank of the river Banganga at the height of 350 feet. It was built by Raja Susharma Chand Katoch. Raja Susharma Chand Katoch’s reference is also found in the great epic Mahabharata. It has been found that he was in the close ally of Kauravas in the Mahabharata war. The famous Kangra fort has faced many wars.In the foreyard of the fort are the temple of ‘Laxmi Narayan’ and ‘Adinath’ located in the Kangra fort is dedicated to Jainism.
The Famous Jwala Ji temple exhibits natural jets of flame. There is no idol and the flame is considered a manifestation of the Goddess. Many researches have been conducted to find the source of the flares of flame, but reason still to be discovered.
Other major tourist attractions of Kangra include Nadaun, Kathgarh, Kangra Art Gallery, Sujanpur Fort, Judge’s Court, and Shiva Temple. Along with these, Dharamshala, Behna Mahadev, Pong Lake Sanctuary, Siddhanatha Temple, McLeod Ganj, Taragarh Palace, and Nagarkot Fort are the other prominent attractions of the region.

There is a broad gauge railhead located in Pathankot near Kangra at a distance of around 90 Km. Taxis are available from railway station to the city.

Kangra is well connected to nearby cities by roadways. Buses are available from Kangra to various places, like Dharamsala, Palampur, Pathankot, Jammu, Amritsar and Chandigarh.
