Kozhikode also known as Calicut, is a beautiful city in the state of Kerala in southern India on the Malabar Coast between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea. Surrounded by the Arabian Sea on the West, and mesmeric peaks of the Wayanad hills on the east, Kozhikode is well known for its beautiful landscape, immaculate beaches, fragrant spice gardens and scenic country sides.
Vasco Da Gama found the place in 1948, when his portages navigator discovered the same accidentally. Kozhikode was the capital of Kingdom of Samoothiris or the Zamorin. The Samoothiri became powerful among the Kings of Kerala due to the flourishing international trade. The name Calicut, is thought to have originated from Calico, the hand woven cloth, which originated here.
The best places to get a sight into its history and natural beauty are the Beypore Fort and Kappad Beach where Vasco da Gama set foot for the first time when he came to India on May 27, 1498. There is a small stone monument at the beach to commemorate that event. Dolphin’s Point is the place to watch frolicking dolphins. On this beach are also situated Calicut Town Center, Lions Club, and a lighthouse. A visit to the Kadalundi Bird Sanctuary is an awsome experience for the bird watchers. It is a house to more than 100 species of birds. The Thusharagiri waterfall is located at a distance of 50 km from Kozhikode, is a perfect place for nature lovers.
