Nandaprayag is one of the Panch Prayags on the Alakananda River. It is located in Chamoli district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand at an altitude of 914mts from sea level. It is situated at the sacred confluence of the Alaknanda River and Nandakini River. The source of Alaknanda River is Satopanth near Badrinath Dham and Nandakini River is emerging from the foot of the Nanda Devi Peak.
Nandaprayag was once the capital of the Yadu dynasty. It is believed that King Nand performed a yagna on a stone that later became the foundation for the Nand Temple in Nandaprayag. According to legend Lord Vishnu answered to his prayer and accepted to be his son but the same blessings was received by Devki, the sister of cruel King Kansa. To manage this situation, lord Vishnu took birth from Devki and was brought up by Nand-Yasoda.
