Ranikhet is located in the Almora district of the Indian state Uttarakhand at an elevation of 1,829mts above sea level. It is also the home for the Kumaon Regiment (KRC) & Naga Regiment and is maintained by the Indian Army.
Ranikhet literally means “Queen’s Meadow” It is belived that Padmini, the beautiful queen of Kumaon region visited Ranikhet and was awestricken by the beauty of this place. Therefore, her husband King Sukherdev constructed a palace at this place and named it ‘Ranikhet’.
Ranikhet was rediscovered by the British in the year 1869. The town of Ranikhet became the headquarters of the British Kumaon Regiment.
Covered by lush green forests and meadows, It is ideal hill station for nature lovers. It offers an opportunity to relax amidst lush green pine, oak, and deodar forests. Its wildlife includes leopard, barking deer, sambar, leopard cat, wild bear, mountain goat, Indian hare, red-faced monkey, pine marten, jackal, red fox, langur, and porcupine.
