Roopkund is situated in the eastern part of Chamoli district of Uttarakhand state of India. It is located at an elevation of 5,029 mts above sea level in the base of Trishul peak and Nanda Ghunti. Roopkund is a high altitude glacial lake. The Roopkund is a very thin kund, some 2 mt in depth, with edges that remains snow covered during most of the year.
Roopkund is also known as “Mystery Lake” or “Skeleton lake” since human skeletons belonged to the people of a 9th century were found here. Who probably died due to hail storm. when the snow melts, one can see hundreds of scattered skulls.
The great Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra takes place once every twelve years at Roopkund from Nauti village near Karnaprayag to Homkund near Roopkund. This yatra is dedicated to Goddess Nanda.
Roopkund track is also famous for trekkers and adventurers. It starts from Debal and passes through lush green grassy land and conifer forests clinging onto the slopes of hills.
